Just Joking, Bill Nye Doesn't Really Smoke Crack

Bill Nye is great. He makes science fun and easy to understand. The same can be said about his newest show Stuff Happens. Stuff Happens airs on Planet Green Tuesdays at 9 PM.

Today’s episode of Stuff Happens titled Garage asks questions such as:

  • Is corn based ethanol really green?
  • Are any biofuels really green (i.e. sugar based, algae based, or switchgrass based)
  • What happened to the electric cars that 10 years ago people were claiming would be the next big thing?
  • What is the world’s most efficient form of transportation?

Some of the answers the show gives might be surprising. For example, Bill Nye seems to be very against corn based ethanol. He also mentions an amusing University of Pennsylvania study that claims people who ride bicycles on a regular basis were actually harming the environment. This is because bicyclists live longer, and by doing so they are around to consume more and produce more waste.

Stuff Happens is probably my favorite show on Green Planet, and this was one of its better episodes. So if you are lucky enough to have a cable company that carries Green Planet, I highly recommend checking this episode out.

Fun Facts Mentioned in the Episode:

  • We have used about 1/2 of world’s oil in 150 years
  • The energy required to make 1 gallon of corn ethanol is equal to burning 65 gallons of gasoline
  • Corn erodes soil 18x faster than it can regenerate
  • By 2020 there will be over 1,000,000,000 cars on Earth
  • There are 15,000,000 skateboarders in the U.S.
  • Skateboards are largely recyclable

  1. I love Billy Nye! That’s hilarious that bikers are more detrimental to Earth than people who would just drive. Go Bill!

My students love Bill Nye! Who better than to deliver the new on global warming to our kids. We need a show that will communicate the facts in kid language then suggest ways to act to help. I’m hoping Bill has a video on the topic and if so where can I get it?

Scott – my only thought would be if there was a Bill Nye the Science Guy episode about global warming. I looked at wikipedia’s list of episodes: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Nye_the_Science_Guy#List_of_episodes and the one that looks the closest is the episode on Climate. But I couldn’t guarantee that episode really focuses on the global warming issue.

  4. I remember watching Bill when I was very young in school – he really made science fun and hope that he is doing well these days :)

  5. I love the Science Guy! When I was in school, I found science class to be really boring. I blame the teacher, because if Bill Nye had taught the class, I’d look forward to it every day.

  6. He is like Ka’Erne Baron of the Philippines. He also makes science fun and easy to understand. We call him the walking encyclopedia. But what I admire most with Bill Nye is his show on Green Planet.

  7. I always found Bill Nye fascinating. Anybody who is that passionate about science — it’s infectious. I found myself repeating things I learned from him to friends.

  8. I love that the Bill Nye photo you use is from the Onion.

Anyway, nobody can deny the guy was one of the first to make geeks look cool.

  9. OMG – what happened to that guy? That’s a face I haven’t seen in years, after seeing him all the time on TV. I realize this post is a couple years old, but is Stuff Happens still on? I’d watch it!

  10. I was impressed with Bill Nye’s cross-generational appeal. On the outside, his shows are meant to be accessible. But overall, the message is intended for everyone.

  11. Billy Nye the Science Guy is very interesting. Quirky and geeky! I love him!

  12. Anybody know what happened to Bill Nye? Is he even on TV anymore? I can’t seem to find any information on his current whereabouts…

  13. I’ll have to admit that I’ve tried the odd Bill Nye inspired science experiment at home. He has gotten me in a lot of trouble with the Mrs. What did ever happen to him?
