So we’ve decided to become a Dofollow blog….

What exactly does that mean?

Wordpress automatically adds nofollow tags to every link visitors put in their comments. Wordpress does this to prevent spam, but it also prevents visitors from being rewarded with valuable backlinks for their intelligent comments.

We do not think that is fair, and from this day on all comments will have the nofollow tag removed.

Consumer Reports Complete Guide to Reducing Energy Costs

This book shares a lot in common with another book I reviewed a few weeks ago, 10 Minute Energy Saving Secrets. Both books cover a lot of the same topics, but the big difference is that this book gives step by step instructions on how to accomplish a lot of the tips mentioned in both books. These step-by-step guides explain tasks such as dryer maintenance, sealing ductwork, installing weather strips, and more. This Consumer Reports guide also features lots of full color graphs, charts, maps, and pictures to help explain exactly what they are trying to get across.

Although the title doesn’t spell this out, 90% of what is in this book is aimed towards homeowners. I would have a hard time recommending this book to anyone who doesn’t own their own home. On the other hand, I can easily recommend this book as a great guide for any homeowner.

I rate this book 4 out of 5 apples. I dock it a point because its readership isn’t fully inclusive.

The Twelve Days of Christmas was one carol that I never understood.  What do all those weird presents have to do with Christmas?   I found out this week, and below is the explanation. I hope you find it as interesting as I did when I received it in an email from my sister.  ENJOY!

From  1558 until 1829, Roman Catholics in England were
not  permitted to practice their faith openly.  Someone
during that era wrote this carol as a catechism  song for young Catholics.
It has two levels of  meaning: the surface meaning
plus a hidden meaning  known only to members of their church. Each element in  the carol has a code word for a religious reality
which  the children could remember.

-The  partridge in a pear tree was Jesus  Christ.

-Two turtle doves were the Old  and New Testaments.

-Three  French hens stood for faith, hope and  love.

-The  four calling birds were the four gospels of Matthew, Mark,  Luke & John.

-The  five golden rings recalled the Torah or Law, the first  five books of the Old Testament.

-The  six geese a-laying stood for the six days of  creation.

-Seven  swans a-swimming represented the sevenfold gifts of the  Holy Spirit–Prophesy, Serving,  Teaching, Exhortation,  Contribution, Leadership, and  Mercy.

-The  eight maids a-milking were the eight  beatitudes.

-Nine  ladies dancing were the nine fruits of the Holy  Spirit–Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness,  Goodness, Faithfulness,
Gentleness,  and Self Control.

-The  ten lords a-leaping were the ten  commandments.

-The  eleven pipers piping stood for the eleven faithful  disciples.

-The  twelve drummers drumming symbolized the twelve points of  belief in the Apostles’ Creed.

What do you think?  It sounds believable to me.

What a great book with a moral which I will mention at the end.  Joseph had a little overcoat, but it was full of holes so he made it into a jacket, then the jacket was worn and he made it into a… The book continues on with this theme showing if you use your imagination you can always make something out of nothing.

This a  colorful book with many visuals and easy to read.  A wonderful  pre schooler book.  You can find this book at Green Store and More.

With family budgets feeling the cramp of the economy more and more people are turning to second hand stores and Web sites for shopping.   When shopping for Children’s products keep in mind the risk of unsafe, recalled items.  When the Consumer Product Safety Commission issues a recall, retailers remove the item from the store shelves, but the general public doesn’t get word of most recalls.  It is reported by the Illinois Attorney General’s deputy chief of staff that fewer than 7% of recalled products are returned to stores. That could leave a lot of unsafe products that often make it into second hand shops and online.  The preceding information was  reported in the Chicago Tribune by Kayce T Ataiyer and two sources to check on recalled product are: www.cpsc.gov the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s Web site and on  www.chicagotribune.com/safeshopping you can find the Illinois attorney general’s “2008 Play it Safe Shopping Guide”.

10-Minute Energy-Saving Secrets – 250 Easy Ways to Save Big Bucks Year Round

By Jerri Farris

I didn’t really like this book. I found that some of the ideas were too simplistic and others seemed a little too ridiculous for me. For example Jerri recommends making sure that skylights have adequate shade. That could be a very cost effective tip depending on where you live. The part where I think she goes too far is when she recommends possibly planting mature trees in your yard to create this shade. I understand that a skylight that is constantly being bombarded by direct sunlight will lead to higher energy costs, but how long would it take to make up for the cost of having a large tree planted just for shade? There are a few other head-scratching suggestions like this to be found in the book.

On the other hand, I think that almost everyone will find a handful of tips in this book that they really hadn’t thought of before. That alone will make up for this book’s reasonable $10 price tag. I personally would recommend reading another energy saving book, but the way this book is presented as a list of tips will definitely be perfect for some readers.

I rate this book 2 out of 5 apples. It may be a great read for some, but I couldn’t get into it.
